1. Create a Professional Vibe

First things first, let's talk about your interview setup. You want to make a great impression, right?

  • Find a quiet spot: Pick a room where you won't be disturbed. Natural light is your best friend, but a good lamp can work wonders too. Make sure are facing the light for the best view. If you place the light behind you, it will cast a shadow over your face.

  • Check your background: Keep it tidy and simple. A plain wall or a neat bookshelf works perfectly. You can also take advantage of virtual backgrounds available in online meeting platforms such as Zoom and MS Teams.

  • Position your camera: Make sure your camera is at eye level. This helps you look more natural and engaged.

2. Tech Check!

Technical hiccups can be stressful! Here's how to make sure everything runs smoothly:

  • Stable internet: Ensure your internet connection is solid. If possible, use a wired connection to avoid any glitches.

  • Test your gear: Check your camera, microphone, and speakers. Do a test call with a friend to make sure everything's working fine.

  • Know the platform: Whether it's Zoom, Teams, or something else, get familiar with it. Know how to mute, unmute, and share your screen.

3. Dress to Impress

Just because it's virtual doesn't mean you can slack off on your outfit.

  • Go professional: Dress like you would for an in-person interview. It helps you feel confident and look the part.

  • Avoid bright colors and patterns: Stick to solid, neutral colors that won’t distract the interviewer.

4. Be Prepared

Being organized shows you're serious about the job.

  • Have your resume handy: Keep a printed copy of your resume and any other important documents nearby.

  • Make some notes: Jot down key points you want to cover, questions to ask, and some details about the company.

5. Practice Makes Perfect

Rehearsing your answers can help you feel more relaxed and confident.

  • Mock interviews: Practice with a friend or family member. It helps you get comfortable with the format. Or schedule a 1:1 coaching session with me!

  • Record yourself: This can help you spot any areas you need to improve, like using filler words or fidgeting. This is one of my favourite strategies for interview prep!

6. Engage and Connect

Even though it’s virtual, you still want to build a connection with your interviewer.

  • Eye contact: Look at the camera when you're speaking. It feels more like eye contact to the person on the other side. If it helps - put a Post-It note beside your camera to remind you to look at it during the interview.

  • Show enthusiasm: Smile and use positive body language. Let your excitement for the job come through.

  • Listen actively: Nod and give verbal cues to show you're paying attention.

7. Stay Cool with Tech Issues

Sometimes, tech problems happen. It’s all about how you handle them.

  • Keep calm: If something goes wrong, don’t panic. It happens all the time - trust me! Apologize briefly and fix the issue quickly.

  • Backup plan: Have a phone number or another way to connect just in case your internet decides to take a break.

8. Follow Up Like a Pro

A little thank-you note can go a long way.

  • Send a thank-you email: Say thanks for the opportunity and mention something specific from the interview. It shows you were really paying attention.

  • Be quick: Send your email within 24 hours to stay fresh in their mind.

Wrapping Up

Virtual interviews might seem a bit daunting, but with the right preparation, you can totally rock them. Set up a professional environment, make sure your tech is on point, dress for success, be organized, practice your answers, engage with your interviewer, stay cool under pressure, and follow up with a thoughtful thank-you. You've got this!

Remember, a virtual interview is a great chance to show off your adaptability and professionalism.

Good luck, and go get that job!
